On the seventh day, halfway through his rest, an angel came to God and said, “You created idiot bosses,” and all he said was “Oops”; after all, this was his rest day. Then he woke up and it was too late to change it; he had no reason to do that anyway, he never has to work for anyone. Woe unto you if your boss is an idiot, it is too late to have an eighth day to un-create idiot bosses.

1. Understand What Interests Your Boss
Look closely, what does the bumbler love? What takes up his time? Is it hockey or basketball? Does he love listening to the latest pop music? Whatever interests him is your gold. Use metaphors of his favourite pass time when passing ideas to him or making a pitch. The bumbler will give you a go ahead for saying in a language that appeals to him than for the actual idea. But who cares, something needs to get done, and he obviously is blind and cannot do it.
2. Remember Who is the Boss
How can you forget when every waking moment in the workplace is spent trying to save the company from his idiocy? However, don’t let your boss ruin your career growth by making his foolishness obvious. Present ideas to him in such a way that he thinks they are his; that way, you get to grow your career without rubbing him the wrong way. Trust me, you do not want an idiot for an enemy.
3. He is Insecure; Never Forget That
Just because he is clueless, do not assume he is unconscious. He knows that he is way over his head and will spend every waking moment defending his actions rather than serving the interests of the company. He will most likely lay his folk (employees) on the butcher’s table than seek to find the source of the problem. Do not be a victim of his insecurities.
4. Focus on Yourself
Evidently, this burger will do nothing to help you advance your career. Focus on yourself and avoid complaining about him or getting his attention unnecessarily. Focus on that promotion you have been working towards or on completing that project that will take your career to the next level. He honestly does not deserve your attention.
5. Check Your Stupidity
The wise man knows better than to listen to idiocy. So, if you find yourself dealing with an idiot boss, examine yourself long and hard. Your stupidity could be fuelling his idiocy. It could be time to perform a personal overhaul or move on to a boss who makes you better.
6. Leave; It’s for the Best
You are there to grow your career and go up the professional ladder not babysit an idiot. If his actions continually inhibit your professional pursuits, pack and leave. Understand that leaving a job may have consequences on your pay, location and retirement benefits. Assess the situation carefully and consult a career counsellor to help you make the move.

If you have an idiot boss, it is time to end the pity party and take more control of your career. Your boss’s actions will only affect you as long as you let them. Resenting your boss is also not an option, unless it adds an extra dollar to your paycheck. Suck up and learn to make the most of his idiocy. Honestly, focus on being positive.
