5 Tips to Stay Healthy at Work – for the Working Woman

Women can be high maintenance, work can be tiresome, combine the two and what have you got? A bad combination, that’s what! It is vitally important that we, women, take care of ourselves in the workplace, because let’s face it, by the time we get home after a long day at the office, all we want to do is eat, put the kids to bed and then collapse in bed ourselves. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at 5 top tips for keeping healthy in the workplace for working women…

1. Protect your back

No, I’m not talking about back stabbers or any other workplace shenanigans. I am talking about sheer back pain experienced by a vast majority of office workers every year. According to a report, a staggering "30.6 million work days were lost as a direct result of back and neck pain gained at work (2013)”. Women on certain contraceptive medication can also experience heightened sensitivity to back pain and so it is important that you learn how to protect your back at work. Be sure to use a back support for your chair, stretch as often as possible, get up and walk around every hour and ensure your computer screen is at the right height so that you do not need to slouch.

2. Avoid snacks and smell vanilla extract


Yes, you heard me right – sniff vanilla extract to put you off eating chocolate! This trick works a treat, and will really help the chocoholics out there to stop snacking on chocolate biscuits throughout the work day. Additionally, it is important that you don’t bring snacks to work with you (unhealthy snacks that is). If it’s not in front of you, you won’t eat it – simple.

3. Take a tally of your water consumption


As mundane as this may sound, it is an incredibly easy way to track how much water you are drinking per day. To stay healthy, the average recommended amount of water is 8-10 glasses per day, so each morning write down a tally of how many glasses you drink.

4. Eat watery foods


Combine your snacking with your necessary water consumption by eating one of these healthy snacks each day at work: grapes, cucumber, watermelon, grapefruit, apples and oranges. You will not only stay fuller for longer, but you will preserve your energy levels and maintain hydration all day long.

5. Don’t order your lunch in

Always get up off your chair and walk during your lunch hour. What’s even better, though, is to eat out one or two times per week and make sure you walk there and back. Not only will you get much needed exercise and an energy boost, but you can begin to work off your lunchtime calories before you even get back to the office!

Staying healthy during working hours will mean that your overall health is much easier to upkeep in general. You will essentially free up your evenings and you will feel less pressured on weekends to be healthy.
