ai-proofing jobs

This guest post is written by Jigar Agrawal from eSparkBiz.

You probably come across news stories every week about how AI will take over jobs, and by now, you’ll know these stories are somewhat true. But while there's indeed some truth to it, it’s not reason enough to feel hopeless as a working professional.

The good news is, although AI automation is displacing jobs, you don’t have to worry about suffering the same fate if you work towards future-proofing your skills and ultimately, your career.

The AI disruption

With tech giants like Microsoft cutting thousands of jobs after investing in AI, it’s easy to get anxious about how AI impacts labor and employment, which will also make you wonder if your job is on the line too.

However, according to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs report, some jobs are being replaced by AI faster than others. Specifically, it’s the job in data-rich industries that are more prone to being impacted by AI.

It’s important to note that anxiety around the AI takeover mostly stems from lack of detailed information when faced with alarming news. Because if one looks closely, there’s more to the numbers.

The numbers are changing

Although there have been several forecasts from the past years about how AI is expected to cause hundreds of millions of job loss in the near future, the numbers continue to change as more and newer data are collected.

Indeed’s Hiring Lab 2025 report on AI at Work indicates that jobs are more likely to be transformed by AI, and not exactly replaced. Their more recent data shows that 19 skills, which make up only 0.7% of the total number of skills analyzed, were found to be ‘most likely’ to be replaced by AI. The remaining bigger chunk of skills? They either won’t be affected at all or will only be modified into hybrid versions.

Avoiding career stagnation

With AI transforming job roles, it’s still a good idea to make sure your skills can keep you competitive for the years to come. If you think your job is safe but do not think about adapting, you’ll likely be left behind with a stagnant career

The AI disruption sees more companies adopting AI-powered systems, like using AI in staff augmentation to improve skill matching in recruitment. This only means that if you want to stay in the game, you have to learn how to play it first.

Here are a few strategies you can start with to keep yourself from feeling stuck as AI transforms the workplace

Sharpen your human-centric skills

Soft skills, also known as human-centric skills, are what will make you irreplaceable as a human worker. If you develop your emotional intelligence and sharpen your skills in problem-solving, creativity, adaptability, and critical thinking, you can collaborate with AI tools faster.

Focus on self-awareness and understanding complex situations, which AI cannot replicate. Also, work on persuasive communication, which you need for building trust. Strong soft skills are your key to adapting to any advanced technology.

Upskill continuously

How do you upskill in the AI era? If you can strive to understand the concept of AI use at work, specifically what it can and cannot do, you can upskill and adapt with a clear direction.

It's essential to understand how AI fits into your business process or work ethic. You can upskill with hands-on AI-assisted projects and enroll in AI courses, certifications, and bootcamps for in-depth knowledge. Once you have a grasp of your AI skill set and what needs to be improved, you can upskill for practical use.

Approach learning with adaptability

Adaptability is embracing the mindset of continuous learning. This is a must in the age of AI, where tech updates are constant. With rapid tech shifts, being adaptable is essential. If your work entails extensive use of software programs, you need to be highly adaptable, as AI systems are more likely to be in place already.

Being adaptable also makes you more receptive to learning opportunities. And with an adaptable mindset, you can learn to solve complex tasks in a dynamic AI environment faster.

Master the human-AI collaboration

With continuous upskilling, an adaptive approach, and human-centric skills, you’re well on your way to building a hybrid skill set. This means learning how to combine your tech skills with human skills, so they complement each other.

It’s also good to focus on broader skills such as project management & ethical reasoning, as they will surely come in handy when your company starts looking for someone they can rely on to oversee both human and AI work.

Forging your career path with AI

Now that you have a clear idea on developing the right skills, you can start planning how to protect your future career path.

Audit your skills

Being aware of your true skill set and level is important in identifying your vulnerabilities. Once you know your strengths and weaknesses as a working professional in general, you can focus on developing them, ideally with the help of AI too. Remember that your goal should be to become highly skilled enough to collaborate with AI efficiently.

Stay updated

Keeping yourself updated with the current and emerging trends in AI development in the workplace will help you not only understand AI faster, but also stay ahead of the tech curve. Take time to learn using new AI tools and features to automate routine tasks and enhance your daily workflow

Read on news updates on business tech, and always anticipate the possibilities of how they can eventually be integrated into your work process.

Collaborate and expand your network

You can expand your network by joining AI communities within your niche. Hop on to platforms like Reddit and LinkedIn to see what everyone’s talking about. Also, look for AI workshops and seminars you can attend to find potential collaborators who can help you build even more connections.

A future-driven approach

The truth is actually good news. AI is more likely to transform jobs than replace them. Although there are companies that have indeed displaced workers in place of advanced AI systems, the reality is more nuanced.

The faster you grasp the concept of AI tools and current AI trends, the more receptive you’ll be to opportunities that will help you evolve with technology.

Adopt a future-ready mindset and continuously seek new ways to innovate in your field. Changes may take you out of your comfort zone, but you can never rise to the top until you embrace them.
