Some People Just Don't Understand: Safety First!

safety shop fail

In the workplace, safety is usually a priority, from the office to the construction site. Protective gear is a must no matter how stupid it makes you look/feel and work environments are optimized to minimize occupational hazards. The problem with safety though is that it doesn’t result in grave personal injury and where’s the fun in that? So let’s have some fun and take at look at these people that have safety very, very low on their priority list and make their dangerous jobs even more risky.

Work is a pain in the ass…and in the case of this crew; they took that to heart…or to ass.

Sometimes you’re out on a job and what you would have available in the shop isn’t available at that location, so you have to improvise. You decide to get a bit MacGyver. Using a cable tie in the absence of a coupler or using duct tape instead of super-glue can work for a limited time, but getting creative while crawling under a couple of tons of steel might not be the best idea. Points for creativity though.

Safety Gear

Sometimes you just got to get the job done. Even if it means not wearing goggles and opting for a clear plastic bucket, so what if it melts from the sparks flying and makes you look like the Phantom of the Opera? A (stupid) man’s got to do what a man’s got to do.

Honorable Mention

So, using paper as a face mask when you are welding might not be the best idea. Because paper+sparks=fire…and considering the paper is on your face paper+fire+face=emergency room visit.

Safety Harness

If you don’t know what a safety harness is, allow me to inform you. It’s a series of straps that connect to an anchor point, so if you fall, the harness will keep you from splatting on the floor like an over-ripe watermelon. Of course, there are people that don’t bother with this minor inconvenience. Instead, they rely on the bond between co-workers and trust them with their lives…literally.

Shipping Equipment

The invention of things such as fork-lifts, cranes and various other loaders has made the shipping and logistics industry much more efficient. It has also made it much safer by reducing both the number of workers injured from heavy lifting and the amount of workers being crushed under heavy loads. That is, if they are used correctly, because using them as car lifters, makeshift ladders or bomb tippers (what? Don’t look at me like that, that’s what it looks like in the picture!) can result in a cornucopia of injury and dismemberment.

I understand, it’s hard to practice what you preach or put your money where your mouth, but it’s just good advertising if you are in the safety business, and you keep yourself "safe"….just sayin’
